Marie-Helene said yes. I was excited. Just the night before, Marie and I went to a concert at Richards on Richards and watched band after band give an awesome performance. When it was over, we talked cloud-talk about doing a road trip in a few hours time. Marie said she was in, but I thought she was just joshing. Three hours later my phone rang, and it was her. "Do you still want to go?" she said. "If not, that's okay, I can go back to sleep." "I'm no chicken," I answered. "C'mon!" Within a heartbeat, Marie was at my place with her long van. We would begin a spontaneous adventure to anywhere. "Breakfast?" she said as we headed to the north shore. I smiled as she pulled into the only shop open at this hour, Tim Hortons. We grabbed ourselves the sandwich combos and a medium coffee. It was the pick-me-up we needed to head to the island. We saw Tofino, barely escaped the wrath of a road-rager, and trampled through the woods among decaying jack-o-lanterns. Later that night, we helped ourselves to a simple meal at a local restaurant, and moved to camp out in the rain. It was a short lived adventure. With wet socks, wind-chill, and red-eye, we strove to find something to no avail. In the end, the familiar Tim Horton's sign was our beacon to warmth and welcome. We sloshed into the shop, stocked up on hot cuppa, and smiled at each other in a tender moment. That was one year ago, and now we still visit Timmy's and recall our first roadtrip with a chuckle.
