Last year, just before Christmas, as usual, it was a very busy, out of control type of busy day, a Wednesday and as all Wednesdays, by the end of my work day, early in the evening, say around 5:30 PM, I was exhausted, and waiting for the last half hour or to end andI could leave and relax. As on most of these insanely, "I must be out of my mind to work here" days, I was in a world of my own, not particularly noticing all the patients who were sitting in the office waiting for their turn to see the physician. Patients would go in the office, come out, I would either book for a procedure, book to see us, etc. and then the person(s) would leave. Suddenly, a little hand appeared on my counter with a card in his hand. I could picture him on tip toe, the top of his head was just barely visible to me. In a rather dull voice, I asked "What's this". The little boy, a rather active young man most of the time, said "This is from mummy". I looked at his mother, rather surprised at the card, and as I opened it, said "Why, thank you!" Inside the card, was Tim Horton's Quickpay card. To say that I was touched by the thoughtful gesture, would be not even close to how I felt. I knew she was a single mother and had been to the office several times in the past few weeks. She said "Thank you for all you did last week". What was it about the gesture that truly touched my heart? the child on tiptoe? the single mother's appreciation? the Christmas season? I will never really know or understand. When I look back on that special moment, it still brings my attitude and perspective back to one of love, giving and a feeling of being appreciated, and for that I am more than happy!
