I had just flown around the world, and I was jet-lagged and out of sorts. It was a Sunday morning on the boardwalk at the Kandahar Air Field in Afghanistan. I wasn't sure I could do the job I had accepted, I missed my wife, my kids, and my sanity. There were pidgeons on the boards, picking up whatever scraps they could find on the patio. My personal little world was upside-down, but I had a hot double-double in my hand from the Tim Hortons at KAF. There was a little wax white smiley-face on the lid. And man, when I drank that coffee, I was transported back home as the warmth soothed my stomach, and the caffiene opened my eyes. I leaned back in my plastic chair, did a sketch of the birds there (my hobby), and collected myself. I started feeling pretty okay.
I stayed with this job for 2 years, it was so rewarding to work with and for the people there. It was such a fantastic luxury to have my cup of "Timmies" there with me the whole time, too. That first sip on a Sunday morning was followed by a hundred more amid the dust and rockets -and dust.
I will always remember that double double fondly, and I know I'm one of many who is grateful for the Tim Hortons location in Kandahar province, Afghanistan.
I'm sending you a copy of the sketch I did, it's pretty rough -my cup and the interested pidgeons, just as I saw them.
Thanks again!
