I immigrated to Canada from the U.S. four years ago. I'll be eligible to apply to become a citizen this year and decided what better way to become a real Canadian than to learn to curl?? I had watched curling at the Olympics and the Tim Hortons Brier and had always been intrigued. I joined a league, attended a beginner's clinic, and showed up to my first draw ready to go. Things went really well, I threw well, I was having fun, I hadn't fallen yet.... then in our last end, I slipped in the house and fell smack on top of a rock, bum-first. The handle, which had been cracked, broke into pieces and went flying. Everyone in the rink was suddenly aware of me, the brand new curler. Not exactly the first impression I wanted to make. All I could do was laugh (and hope it never happened again). I have the pieces of the handle on my mantel as a souvenir. I'm hooked on curling now and luckily things have gone a little more smoothly in the rest of my curling career.
