My wife and I met at a Tim Hortons in Windsor, Ontario in 1994. She was the doughnut lady--working there for a summer job while at university. I was one of many Americans streaming through their store in the wee hours of the night hoping to sober up a bit before the trip back to the States and the always friendly border patrol.

I made a tribute to Tim Horton's back in 1996 when I launched my first personal web site. This is what I wrote (the audience was obviously American):

What, you don't know what Tim Hortons is? It's the greatest donut chain in all of Canada (or at least in all of Ontario, which is all I've seen of Canada so far anyway, 'cept for a day or two in Quebec). Of course, ol' Tim was a great Canadian hockey star (who else would the Canadians revere more?). They have DRIVE-THRU donut stores in Canada! Now THAT is convenience. Anyway, the rest is history...

POSTSCRIPT: Tim Hortons has come to Michigan! Yes, that's right, Michiganians can now enjoy the fatty doughnut delights of T.H. Apparently Wendy's International bought the company, and it's moving into some new stores and a bunch of old Hardee's restaurant. (Which is a shame, really, as I always liked Hardee's, especially their cinnamon apple pie *slurp drool*. But now that Mickeedee's has a baked apple pie I don't feel so bad about eating them...)

Note, the postscript was written back when the news of Tim Horton's expansion into the States was announced.
