Representing a visible minority / immigrant group can be a tad harder to cope with at certain times. Hailing from the proudly diverse city of Toronto, it normally takes some getting used to when we travel away from the city. The ethnic uniformity of small town Canada can at times be overwhelming and intimidating to someone like me who is used to diversity. There have been many times when I have felt like a stranger in these new places - a bit jittery and self conscious. But, the instant we spot a Tim Hortons and pull in, there floods a sense of belonging. The familiarity of the place... the aroma...the people... the feeling... just wipes away any feeling of alienation. Sipping that cup of coffee lets me know that I am still at home.
