A few years ago, my husband and I attended the World's Curling Championship in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It was when they still had the men and women play at the same venue. We flew from Thunder Bay to Winnipeg for the last four days of the championship. Prior to leaving our hotel in Thunder Bay we met some people we knew in the Lobby. When they asked where we were going we said to the World's Curling Championship. We talked a bit more then as we left the hotel to catch the airport shuttle, the lady we were talking to called out "Good luck, hope you win!!! We laughed all the way to the airport. Once in Winnipeg, we checked into our hotel and found out the times the shuttle would pick us up at our hotel. We caught the shuttle, which took us about 45 minutes to get to the arena where the curling was held, once it stopped at all the area hotels picking up and dropping off curling fans. We were quite surprised on the way back by shuttle that we were only a ten minute walk from the arena and the route took us right by a Tim Hortons which made a perfect stop on our trip to and from the arena for the next four days. The curling was very exciting, it was great caliber of curling. The antics of the participants were very enjoyable from the Swedish Men's team chanting "Sweden's got some beautiful women" (in a strong Swedish accent) to the collecting of money for the Sandra Schmirler Fund. It was also very touching to see Colleen Jones young son go around and around the arena with a flag getting the crowd to cheer for his Mom playing in the final game. She lost the game and the next day's newspaper showed her son in tears hugging his Mom. I am sure it was only a momentary let down for them and his Mom's team went on to win many more titles for which he probably cheered her on to. All in all we say alot of good sportsmanship and international competition that weekend in Winnipeg. Our stops at Tim Hortons to and from the arena were enjoyable, too.
