Hockey, yup I said hockey. Every little boy growing up in small town Canada dreams of playing hockey and becoming the next great Wayne Gretkey playing in the NHL. That is every little boy except mine.

During the winter months my son watched his Dad head out of the house every Monday night to play men's night at the local curling club. Our nights as a family weren't spent around the television watching hockey, but spent searching the channels to see if any curling bonspiels were being televised and yes we watched every single end of every Brier.

So it came as no surprise when my son asked to join the junior curling league at the local club. My husband was so elated that he didn't just sign up our son to curl, but signed himself up to coach as well. That was the beginning of a great father/son relationship and all thanks go to a curling rock, a broom and a love for a very special game.

That very first year my husband decided to take a team of four, 9 year old boys, all first year curlers, to the Timbits Elementary School Championships. What was he thinking, taking 4 boys, who in all honesty had no business being there in the first place. What were they going to do curling against kids who were bigger, older and many years more experienced.

Well, let me tell you, I think there is something to be said for playing a game simply for the love of the game and the fun of the friendships made along the way because these 4 boys walked away from this event with trophy's in their hands and the biggest smiles you have ever, ever seen.

Thank you Tim Hortons, because that was year one of what has become a fantastic event for not only my son, but for many kids from our small, rural curling club.

Remember, it is not always how well you play the game, but how much fun you have doing it and how many friends you make along the way.
